SIXTEEN people have put their hands up to run for the Liberal National Party's Queensland Senate ticket.

Preselection will take place in Brisbane on November 24.

Liberal senator Ian Macdonald is re-nominating for another term and is likely to get top spot.

The party has two other winnable positions to fill with Liberal senator Sue Boyce and Nationals senator Ron Boswell retiring when their terms expire in June 2014.

Among the 16 candidates are Senator Barnaby Joyce's chief of staff Matthew Canavan, LNP vice-president Gary Spence and the architect of Queensland premier Campbell Newman's election campaign, James McGrath.

Earlier this year, Mr McGrath lost his bid for LNP preselection for the Sunshine Coast seat of Fisher, held by embattled former speaker Peter Slipper, against former Howard government minister Mal Brough.

LNP state director Brad Henderson said there was a strong field of high calibre candidates.

The list includes local councillors, doctors, business operators and an animal nutritionist.
