Somali Shebab claim attack on UN compound

SOMALIA'S al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents say they have attacked and shot their way into a key United Nations compound in the capital Mogadishu.

"Our commandos have attacked the UN compound... we set off an explosion and have entered the compound, where we are fighting with the infidel forces," a senior Shebab official said on Wednesday.

Somali police officer Abdi Hassan described the gunfire as "heavy".

A UN official said the attack was against a building just outside the secure airport compound where all the UN agencies are based.

The official said she was close to the compound when the blast occurred but was not inside.

She said UN security officers were battling the gunmen.
