THE mother of a little girl discovered wandering along a NSW Central Coast street is believed to have come forward.
The woman has told police there was a mix-up in caring arrangements for the girl, who is aged around three years old.
The girl told officers her name is Monique, or Nikki, and she goes to pre-school but she was unable to tell them any more about her identity.
She was found by a member of the public walking along on a street at Springfield around 10am (AEST) on Sunday morning.
Police officers spent the day canvassing the local area, but no one was able to shed light on who Monique was.
The Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) was also alerted.
A photo of blonde-haired little girl went viral on the NSW Police Facebook page, garnering 167,000 views in just a few hours.
Eight hours after she was discovered, police said a woman claiming to be Monique's mother contacted police at Gosford.
"There are going to be some strict questions asked," a police spokeswoman said, adding police were still confirming the woman's identity.
